Sin City is based on the comic novel by the same name by Frank Miller. It is directed by Frank Miller, Robert Rodrigeuz and Quentin Tarantino. If that alone is not enough to make you take notice, it stars Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Elijah Wood and Michael Madsen. It is set somewhere in the 1940’s, and it has a film noir feel with very strong comic book influence. In fact, I’m convinced this movie the best recreation of a comic book to date. It doesn’t just take the characters and make a cheezy movie filled with cliche’s, Miller has genuinely created the feel, flow, rhythm and tone of a comic book on screen. The characters even talk as though they were delivering comic book lines (my most memorable quote being “I’m killing my way to the truth”).
Unfortunately, the film is almost too much like a comic book and not enough like a movie. It consists of three separate stories that do not really ever come together, and sometimes I yearned for some real dialogue. Sure seeing people be blown away is awesome, but can that awesomeness necessarily be recreated on the big screen? More to the point, should it?
Basically, if you like comic books or gory action movies, you will spend this entire movie saying awesome. It is awesome on screen, and it is probably the most awesome movie I have ever seen. A bit rough around the edges and definately not oen to take your girlfriend or parents to, but literally awesome in movie form. Four leamas.
